Day 9

Day 9

I got tired of fighting with the backlight in this room and hung a sheet for Surri to play on while I take her pictures.

It seems like it would be easier to take care of Surri now that she feels better. She doesn't need eye ointment any longer and one of her oral meds was discontinued. I'm not giving her Fast Balance, either, the stuff is too nasty and I have a probiotic that I can sprinkle on her food that tastes yummy. But taking care of Surri is more time consuming and more difficult. Why? Because she feels better and does not want to be nebulized or coupaged or pilled. She wants to eat and sleep and play. She also cries when I give her her shots now, which tears me up.

I came into the picture late in Surri's story and I haven't always heard all of the facts. There is at least one big mystery in her story that no one understands and that is why did she get so sick. A cat has to be seriously immuno-suppressed for this to happen and that most commonly means FIV, FeLV or something along those lines. But she does not have those things.

Surri's foster mom has been on vacation and came to see Surri this morning for the first time since returning. We talked about a lot of things and I found out that Surri was taken to the kill shelter with her kittens but all of her kittens died. This may be an important piece of the puzzle of why she got so sick. Maybe they all got sick but Surri, as an adult, recovered but the babies did not. Or, maybe she came in to the shelter starving like so many come to us. Those are big hits on the immune system. Then she nursed three additional liters of kittens in consecutive order. Then she was spayed. Then she had a second surgical procedure related to the spay. That's a lot in a short amount of time. But I don't think we'll ever know for sure.

I can not believe this month is half gone. It is one giant blur for me.

Day 894 - Day 164

Day 894 - Day 164

Lifetime Dream # 46 of my list of 155: I will complete a list of 1,000 small things that I can do with Samantha to create precious memories, creating a stronger bond between us that will strengthen our love.

When my sister died, as one would expect… I learned a lot of things and made a lot of realizations. I like to believe that I have always appreciated life and what a gift it is. With the amount of friends and family that have died around me, I’d like to think that I appreciate life and how you can be here one day and gone the next. My sister’s death was not expected in the least…

I had a lifetime dream to own a yacht; I wanted to sail the oceans but really I thought it was a rather selfish and materialistic dream, so I decided to adopt things I learned from her death. I met my wife late in life, and I thought it would be fun to make up for lost time. So I made a list of 1,000 things that we could do as adults, that we would have experienced as kids, teens, young adults, or as the adults we are… to make up for lost time and to make the times we have a little more memorable.

Routines are terrible… it’s the new experiences that come across your path each day that really make life and time stand still. Like every relationship, we’ve had good and bad times. There are many things on the list (some simple, some pretty involved), but I hope we can complete the list in this lifetime. I don’t need getaways to some far off tropical island to enjoy life… I can do it sitting down to a new meal, or putting a puzzle together.

Pictured here was a Toy Story fest that we had on her birthday. I was able to see all of these movies in the theater with my daughter and these have always made a special bonding memory with one another. It was nice to be able to complete the series with my wife last summer; I think we were all tearing up at the end.
